Are Nuts Really Healthy?

Are you buying “raw” nuts that are not really raw?

Should you pay extra for Organic nuts?

And, why bother soaking them?

Eating nuts and seeds are a great way to add vitamins, minerals, fiber, and essential fatty acids to our diet…. but only if you know what you buying and how they are prepared.

healthy living real food traditional foodSurprisingly, most of the nuts at the markets in the United States are not really “raw”, though they may be labeled as raw.  Almonds in particular are difficult to purchase raw because of a law that was passed in 2007 which required that California almonds be pasteurized before being sold in stores.  So, though you may be buying Almonds in a health food store or grocery store, that are labeled as “raw”, they cannot legally sell you California grown almonds unless they were pasteurized.

So, why are they marked “raw”?  It sounds like false advertising to me!  more…

Soaking Nuts Recipe

Soaking nuts makes them more digestible, provides more nutrients, takes out the anti-nutrients and the flavor is enhanced. Drying or dehydrating nuts helps to preserve nutrients.

soaking walnuts by Chiots Run via FlickrMy daughter is unfortunately allergic to nuts so I couldn’t take my own pictures. But, soaking and drying nuts and seeds is something I have done before my little sweetie was born – they taste so much better than the store bought roasted nuts. Though, I certainly didn’t realize all the benefits to buying raw, organic nuts, and soaking them, until I researched more and wrote my post “Are Nuts Really Healthy?”.

Soaking and drying nuts are very easy to do; only a few minutes of mixing things up and transferring them to a pan, the rest is really just waiting more…

Would you like more information on Oral Health?

There was so much helpful information that was presented at The HealThy Mouth World Summit.  There were 21 speakers from around the world all discussing oral health. It ended last night with the last of the Q & A sessions.

I unfortunately did not get to listen to all the presentations during the Summit week, and do plan to listen to the others at my leisure. The ones that I did listen to were informative and my daughter and I are going to do a little experiment with our dental care in the next few months.

Did you miss part of the Summit that you were hoping to listen to? Or did you hear about the Summit too late? You can still get all the presentations, videos, audios, transcripts, and Q/A sessions that took place over the entire week. more…

beautiful smile by Sirsnapsalot via flickrI’m really excited about this Summit. Will and Susan Revak, founders of OraWellness have put together this wonderful line-up of speakers. Back in early November I heard about it and called Will to get more details. Shortly thereafter I had to deal with a couple of unwanted dental predicaments. I was enjoying Thanksgiving dinner with relatives, and taking may last few savory, but leisurely, bites, when I crunched on something rather more…

DIY MoisturizerOther than being a fun project, the biggest reason I love making homemade lotion is that it is inexpensive and it doesn’t contain any chemical ingredients or strong scents (which I don’t like on my skin or in my body whenever I can avoid it).  And, for those who have sensitivities to scents and additives, this could be a simple solution for you to enjoy the benefits of a really moisturizing lotion.  It absorbs quickly and it feels great on your skin! more…
